A Single Phase Motor works on the principle of alternating current. The AC flow is passed through the stator winding to create a magnetic flux. The rotor then passes through the magnetic flux and spins in an opposite direction. This motion generates a current in the rotor. This current is called the rotor current.
A Single Phase Motor has two windings, the start winding and the running winding. The start winding is positioned 90 degrees from the running winding. The start winding is connected in series with a capacitor of higher capacity than the running winding. This causes the start winding to reach its maximum current first. The two alternating fields cause the rotor to rotate in a helical pattern.
Single-phase motors are usually used for smaller loads in offices and homes. For heavy loads in industries, 3-Ph motors are preferred. Single Phase Motors are generally more reliable than three-phase motors. The two types of motors have their own advantages and disadvantages. A Single Phase Motor is more efficient, whereas a Three-Phase Motor has higher starting currents and lower operating efficiencies.
DC Single-Phase Motors are usually capacitor-start. They have high starting torque and high efficiency. They are typically used in blowers, exhaust fans, heaters, and water coolers.
